Gerd in Infant
By admin | July 19, 2008
It is relatively common for babies under 1 year old to regurgitate their food or vomit. This is known as Gastroesophigal Reflux (GER).This usually resloves itself by the time the baby is 6-12 months.
The development of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) in young children is less common. If GERD in infant is apparent, this needs to be addressed as soon as possible. It is, therefore, important that parents/carers are aware of the signs and symptoms.
GERD occurs when the muscle between the esophagus and the stomach opens allowing acidic contents from the stomach to flow into the esophagus. The acidic liquid causes pain and discomfort as it come into contact with the walls of the esophagus. If left unchecked this condition can cause damage to the esophagus.
There are a range of symptoms that might suggest that your baby is experiencing GERD. These include: chronic vomitting, frequent coughing, irriability around mealtimes, refusal of food, signs of discomfort such as back arching, failing to gain wight or losing weight and respitory problems.
It can be difficult to identify GERD in infant because many of the symptoms are also associated with other conditions including metabolic problems. The diagnostic process usually starts with the doctor taking a history of the child’s symptoms (it is advisable to keep a log of any worrying signs that your child may displaying). This may then be followed up with medical tests.
When an infant is diagnosed with GERD parents or carers are often advised to make some changes to their care routine. For example, try to ensure that your child doesn’t go to sleep straight after a meal, feed your child small frequent meals and elevate the top part of your child’s bed (by placing blocks under the bed) so that your child is not sleeping in a completely flat position. . In some cases, GERD in infant will be addressed through medication and in very rare cases surgery may be recommended. To summarize, GERD is a condition that can occur in infants. It is important seek medical advise if your child is displaying any of the symptoms outlined above or any other signs that might indicate ill health.
